THE POSITION
RAN’s Climate and Energy Program focuses on curbing fossil fuel expansion by shifting financial flows and getting the world’s largest banks and insurance companies to develop and implement comprehensive climate and human right policies. Tackling the climate crisis requires an unprecedented shift away from fossil fuels that are the biggest driver of climate change, and impact the rights, health and wellbeing of frontline communities across the world.
RAN is looking for a passionate and driven Policy and Engagement Manager to support the Climate and Energy Program’s engagement with banks and insurance company campaign targets. In this position you will lead policy analysis, design campaign strategies, collaborate with a range of partners, and use savvy negotiating and advocacy skills to engage and pressure financial institutions to stop supporting fossil fuel companies and infrastructure. Whether in a boardroom with a corporate contact, on the phone with frontline community allies opposing fossil fuel infrastructure, or in a team meeting, the ideal candidate will enjoy interacting with people on a variety of levels while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient.
The Policy and Engagement Manager reports to the Climate and Energy Program Director.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead engagement and negotiations with financial-sector targets and help develop overall campaign strategy
Track and analyze developments in individual bank policies and in the broader landscape of initiatives shaping bank policy on fossil fuels and climate change
Engage strategic contacts in the financial sector, especially at banks, insurance and investment firms
Research and analyze financial-sector support for fossil fuel companies and projects
Act as spokesperson for RAN in media
Coordinate with external coalitions on the development of engagement and accountability strategies for campaign targets;
Participate in RAN’s organizational planning, racial justice, anti-oppression and diversity initiatives, and training sessions; support cross campaign and cross program moments;
Keep the C&E team and organization abreast of policy trends, campaign plans and accomplishments;
Contribute to the creation of a diverse, equitable and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences.
QUALIFICATIONS
A minimum of 5 years’ experience in policy advocacy or corporate campaigning;
Experience with high level corporate/policy negotiations;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;
Strong interpersonal, analytical, research, and project management skills;
Ability to work to tight deadlines and juggle multiple priorities;
Knowledge of climate justice and human rights ;
Strong knowledge and understanding of the role of finance in driving energy transitions;
Understanding of the roles that science, politics, organizing, economics, and communications play in campaigning;
Interest in and knowledge of anti-oppression, diversity and racial justice issues is critical.
Understanding of non-violent direct action as both a strategy and a tactic is preferred.
COMPENSATION
This is a full-time position with an anticipated starting salary range of $85k to $95k, commensurate with experience. RAN staff are eligible to work remotely from anywhere they are legally authorized, or to work out of RAN’s office in San Francisco.
Benefits include 100% RAN-paid health, dental and vision insurance for the employee and their partner/family, 4 weeks PTO (increases to 5 weeks after 2 years) as well as a paid winter break, and a retirement plan with a 3% employer match. Additionally, after each 5 years of service, staff are eligible for a 12 week fully-paid sabbatical.
