Selects products, negotiates procurement deals with suppliers, and analyzes statistics that represents category growth and profitability by department. Evaluates sales and product profitability, aids with product placement.

THE OPPORTUNITY (Hybrid Work Location / Home / Office)
Santa Monica Seafood is growing and rapidly becoming the largest and most well-known processor and distributor of fresh and frozen seafood in the Southwestern United States. We operate 11 facilities in five states CA, IL, NM, NV, and TX. The Sourcing & Procurement team continues to grow and is in pursuit of driving strategic initiatives that will continue to drive sustainable growth and cost efficiency. The Category Manager will be responsible for implementing Category Management practices company-wide developing, and executing strategic sourcing efforts, sharing the Santa Monica Seafood Purchasing philosophy across the Company to ensure compliance, cost savings and performance measures are tracked and achieved, and identifying and implementing cost savings initiatives, enabling technologies and process improvements to help streamline the sourcing cycle.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
Reporting to the SVP Procurement, the selected incumbent will be responsible for overall management, coordination, and direction of enterprise-wide contracts. Key accountabilities include:
Develop and execute Category Management plans which create the greatest net value for Santa Monica Seafood
Conduct feasibility efforts to identify the best spend category candidates for Strategic Sourcing
Facilitate and lead discussions with key stakeholders to continually reassess requirements and gather feedback on ways that sourcing programs can be improved
Establish enterprise-wide contracting strategy
Establish, identify and implement opportunities to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of contracting processes, policies and procedures across Business Units
Manage compliance/savings and performance measurement processes to ensure that the company meets and/or exceeds cost savings and performance improvement targets
Establish and implement enabling technologies to continually improve and augment contracting processes
Provide input to company’s strategic/operating plans
Ensure that the Strategic Sourcing processes are conducted so that the most favorable terms, conditions and pricing structures are negotiated in the best interest of company
Send out RFQ/RFPs: manage, make decisions, document
Lead contract management: Prepare, analyze, negotiate contracts
Maintain vendor scorecard: service level agreement, product quality, vendor performance monitoring
Prepare monthly purchasing price variance analysis for assigned categories
Find alternative vendors
Leverage knowledge of product categories and market
Manage buyer volume and execution of contract agreements
Supervise buyer assigned to category
MISSION CRITICAL OBJECTIVES
Develop both mid-term and long-term strategic plans and drive action towards specific goals.
Manage all respective contracts by preparing, analyzing and negotiating contracts.
Oversee Requests for Quotations (RFQs) and Request for Proposals (RFPs); managing, making decisions and documenting the process.
Establish Vendor Scorecards, overseeing service level agreements, product quality, and the monitoring of vendor performance.
Conduct purchase price variance analysis and utilize this information to drive strategy and negotiations.
Find alternative vendors and build strong relationships.
Become an expert of product categories and the overall market.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
5 to 10+ year experience leading a strategic sourcing function
Demonstrated capability to lead as strategic sourcing effort where none had previously existed
Ability to motivate and train users, from various organizations, in strategic sourcing methodology and approaches
Internal customer focus – ability to identify key stakeholder needs and develop programs and procedures to address their needs
Ability to influence across organizational boundaries, often without positional authority
Strong experience working with a diversified range of products and services
Familiarity with Seafood operations or perishable products, such as produce, dairy, etc.
Knowledge and application of Total Cost of Ownership (TCOO) approaches and calculations
Knowledge of corporate financial reporting processes and capital budget planning and execution processes
Understanding of external market assessments and economics to ensure best pricing/service mix for goods and services
Ability to think strategically

EDUCATION REQUIRED
Four-year degree or equivalent experience, including military or professional certification
