Purpose:
The Lab Pack Chemist will be responsible for managing all on-site aspects of jobs secured by our market leading sales organization as well as helping with internal projects. No two days will be the same! Projects may include lab packs, waste coordination, waste transportation, environmental assessments, waste consolidation, and any other work required to advance the program. The Lab Pack Chemist will work closely with HCC’s Lab Pack Project Manager, Field Services Managers (FSMs) and Branch Sales Managers (BSMs) to schedule and complete projects with a strict focus on upholding regulatory standards, safety, and customer service. The Lab Pack Chemist will be expected to possess a valid CDL class B license with a Hazmat and Tanker endorsement as well as maintain an OHSA Hazwoper. Crystal Clean values continuous learning and education, as such the company will pay for CHMM training including prep materials and testing fees, once the selected candidate passes one year of employment with the company.
Specific Duties:
Responsible for engaging in and promoting safe work behaviors in a manner that is consistent with OSHA regulations, HCC safety guidelines and company values.
Responsible for an upholding all DOT and RCRA regulations governing the creation and transportation of lab packing hazardous waste.
Breakout customer chemical inventories based on chemical compatibility, RCRA and DOT constraints.
Perform field tests, HazCat and proper sampling of various waste streams at customer sites.
Assist customers in the neat and accurate completion of all required paperwork including packing lists, labels, manifests/ BOL’s, and land disposal restriction notifications.
Completes all jobs with customer specific disposal restrictions and/or special packaging or handling requirements in mind.
Assist the Lab Pack Project Manager with waste coordination activities including working with internal and 3rd party disposal outlets to profile and approve.
Assis with transporting the waste to the most cost effective and efficient TSDF available.
Work with Crystal Clean branches and hubs to assist with (non-haz, and non-reg) waste consolidation as well as assist on an as needed basis with other quality control activities to ensure Crystal Clean remains compliant with all local, state, and federal regulations on waste storage and handling.
Adhere to all corporate policies and standards including but not limited to environmental, health, & safety (EHS), human resources, facility, equipment, operations, and maintenance.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Position Qualification Requirements:

Expert knowledge of DOT and RCRA regulations as they relate to Lab Packaging
Expert knowledge of RCRA and non-RCRA permitted disposal outlets in the geography assigned.
Detailed knowledge of EPA permitted RCRA part-B facilities and waste accepted into each.
Work Experience:
3-years of progressive responsibility with hazardous material management in a field environment.
Minimum 2-years’ experience in lab packaging is required.
Expert knowledge of DOT and RCRA rules and regulations, specifically as they relate to lab packing services and transportation of lab packaged waste(s).
RCRA/Hazwoper experience required.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Access)
2-years’ experience driving box truck or tractor trailer
Experience with completing waste manifests and other regulatory documentation.
Education, Certificates, Licenses, or Designations:
BS in physical Science or equivalent work experience.
Motor vehicle record (MVR) that meets or exceeds HCC’s published standards including, but not limited to the following:
Seat belt and cell phone violations
Excessive speeding
DUI, suspension and/or multiple vehicle collisions
CDL-B or CDL-A, Hazmat and Tanker Endorsement preferred but ability to attain both endorsements within 90-days of hire will be considered.
Desire to attain a CHMM designation within 18-months of the date of hire.
Personal Protective Equipment :
Ability to wear personal protective equipment, which may include a respirator, steel toe boots, gloves, uniform, safety glasses, reflective vest, and hard hats.
Physical Requirements:
Frequent lifting of materials that typically weigh 54-80lbs.
Frequent pushing/pulling of 16-55-gallon drums or larger containers of waste/product using HCC-approved equipment for safe material handling, drum weight may exceed 400lbs.
Frequent lifting of drums weighing up to 100lbs.
Frequent climbing of ladders to access approved waste streams.
Occasionally pulling/dragging of hoses weighing up to 100lbs each
Frequent lifting of grates, manhole covers, and other plates to access approved waste streams.
All applicants must pass the pre-employment physical including drug & alcohol screening.
Travel Requirements:
The selected candidate will be required to travel in an assigned geography and occasionally outside of the assigned geography as required the schedule and demands of the customer.
Travel will be via the most efficient route and will include both air travel and driving.
Travel will be expected to be between 40-60% of the time.
Work Environment:
While performing essential duties of this position an individual regularly works in a variety of environments, and is required to see, talk, hear, reach, stand, walk, drive frequently, and comfortably use electronic devices and other office equipment. Essential duties require bending, squatting, climbing, lifting and twisting frequently. Noise level in the workplace can vary based upon the work environment.
