This role’s primary purpose is to ensure smooth lab operations at OBT’s San Jose site. This involves organising the labs, ordering necessary lab supplies and ensuring the lab is fully stocked at all times, arranging maintenance and repairs of lab equipment and minimising instrument downtime. Budgeting and ensuring OBT obtains value-for money in purchases of lab consumables, service contracts etc.
In addition to lab management the role will also oversee health and safety and compliance with relevant local law at OBT’s San Jose lab site.
Key responsibilities
· Ensure labs are fully stocked with necessary consumables and supplies at all times
· Coordinate with lab scientists to ensure they always have the required supplies
· Arrange for routine maintenance and calibration of all lab equipment (weighing scales, pipettes, biological safety cabinets, freezers, lab equipment etc)
· Arrange maintenance contracts for lab equipment
· Arrange for rapid repairs of vital lab equipment as required
· Ensure clear communication with lab scientists at all times in matters affecting the labs
· Ensure OBT obtains good value money in all purchases of consumables, service contracts etc
· General budgeting for lab consumables, maintenance contracts etc
· Liaise with local building management to resolve any problems with infrastructure affecting the offices and labs
· Oversee maintenance of OBT’s cell banks and liquid nitrogen storage
· Report issues and emerging needs to management in a timely manner
· Coordinate shipping and receipt of materials from suppliers and business partners quickly and efficiently
Health and Safety Role
Ensuring OBT remains compliant in all areas of health and safety, including but not limited to:
· Creation, updating and maintenance of health and safety policy for OBT’s San Jose site
· Provide training and reminders to staff about health and safety compliance and requirements
· Updated relevant Health and Safety policy and Company Statement of Intent
OSHA
· Risk Assessments as required
· Site inspections, and policy and procedure reviews are properly implemented and controlled
· Documented working practices are in place
· Health and safety training requirements are identified and budgeted for
· Creation of H&S audits and appropriate recording mechanism in place
· Accurate recording of incidents and accidents, with relevant communication to stakeholders
· Assessments to ensure all equipment working safely and maintained
· Professional review and policy of safety processes implemented in the use of human tissue
· Ensure specialty areas are regularly reviewed (eg fire regulations, hazardous substances, safeguarding machinery and occupational disease) with relevant policy and procedure updates .
· Quality Management System – requires updating, currently not supportive in managing compliance review dates
· Report issues and emerging needs to management in a timely manner
Laboratory Management:
· Negotiation and management of servicing contracts including annual maintenance, preventative maintenance and fault rectification for all laboratory equipment/facilities
· Maintenance of emergency protocols for power failure – UPS, relocation of materials/company assets in the event of failure
· Out of hours provision for laboratory issues
· Management of specialist waste disposalOperational responsibility and preventative maintenance of Mass Specs
Scientific Role:
· Sample management and sample processing of historical assets to aid the renewed TD effort
· Provision of training and sample knowledge to enable the development of the new TD team
