Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Associated Entities and Investment Accounting provides extensive accounting, administrative and investment support to the University and UNC-Chapel Hill affiliated foundations and associated entities. Departmental responsibilities include preparing the financial statements and managing the audits for the UNC-Chapel Hill Foundation, Inc., Chapel Hill Foundation Real Estate Holdings, Inc., the UNC-Chapel Hill Foundation Investment Fund, Inc., Carolina Research Ventures, LLC, Qura Therapeutics, LLC and HVPV Holdings, LLC. The department also compiles, monitors and prepares the UNC-CH associated entity compliance report as required by the Board of Governors’ policy on university associated entities.
The department updates, administers and maintains the Unit Accounting System (UAS) which tracks university and associated entity endowment investments in the Chapel Hill Foundation Investment Fund, Inc. (CHIF). For each individual endowment invested in CHIF, UAS reports contribution value, market value and estimated payout across all university and foundation funds. The department also reconciles and provides management reports for the university temporary pool, intermediate pool and university trust funds.
Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to provide professional accounting knowledge and support to Chapel Hill Foundation Real Estate Holdings, Inc. (REH). In addition, this position will support the Associated Entities and Investment Accounting unit prepare the consolidated financial statements of the UNC-Chapel Hill Foundation, Inc. (Foundation) and assist with the annual audits of the Foundation and REH. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, preparing annual 1099-NEC forms, reconciling UNC-Chapel Hill’s planned giving assets, preparing Orange County business personal property tax listing and creating new sources and fund authorities for university associated entities.
REH is a component unit of the Foundation and was established to own, lease and, in some cases, manage real estate used in the operations of the University or held for the benefit of the University, the University Foundation, and University affiliated entities. This position serves as the central point of contact for all REH matters and works with both internal and external stakeholders of the corporation. This position ensures REH transactions are accurately and timely recorded according to accepted accounting standards and applies all relevant GASB pronouncements. Granville Towers, LLC (GT LLC) is a component unit of REH, and this position will review and record monthly transactions provided by Granville Towers’ management company. This position will prepare the annual financial statements that present all funds belonging to REH and GT LLC, research and resolve accounting issues and discrepancies, ensure compliance with debt covenants and process payments.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or Associate’s degree in accounting; or Associate’s degree in business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Position requires an in-depth knowledge of accounting theories and principles with the ability to apply those standards. Position will be responsible for identifying problems and changing requirements regarding management needs, auditing programs and scheduling, and developing financial reports. Position must also independently resolve complex problems for which no clear precedent exists and apply new standards. Management will look to this position to recommend actions or alternatives to be considered when issues arise or to make processes and procedures more efficient. Position must also have advanced communication skills and the ability to convey complex issues in a concise and comprehensive manner. Position requires advanced accounting software skills including Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, to be able to present information in a clear, organized, accurate and concise manner.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
CPA is preferred.
Prior work experience with an institution of higher education using Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software, especially finance and reporting modules.
Experience preparing financial statements for nonprofit corporations in accordance with GASB requirements is desirable.
