Tenure-track Faculty Position in Accounting
Associated with Two Clusters of 10 New Faculty Positions
The College of New Jersey
To enrich education through diversity, TCNJ is an Equal Opportunity Employer. TCNJ has a strong commitment to inclusive excellence and is working to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and racial justice among our faculty, staff, and students. We strongly encourage a host of diverse, intersectional populations and cultures to apply including, but not limited to, identities based on race, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, national origin, and veteran status.
The Department of Accounting and Information Systems at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites applications for a 10-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Accounting to join our community starting in August 2023.
Applicants with teaching interests from all areas of accounting will be considered, with a preference for financial and cost accounting with cybersecurity or data analytics expertise. The successful candidate will have earned a doctorate in Accounting. ABDs will be considered; however, candidates should hold or be near completion of a Ph.D. in Accounting from an AACSB accredited institution. Professional certification (such as a Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant) is a plus. The successful candidate must have a commitment to publish in peer reviewed journals, advise and mentor students, and engage in service to the college community.
We are interested in candidates whose research and teaching will connect and integrate with other disciplines and who have the potential to collaboratively contribute to interdisciplinary curricular and scholarly efforts.
Candidates should be committed to inclusive excellence in higher education, demonstrated through, for example, culturally responsive course design and pedagogy, equity-minded student engagement and mentorship, and cultivating intercultural competencies needed for meaningful citizenship.
TCNJ has a strong commitment to inclusive excellence in our community and to supporting a healthy work-life balance for our faculty of teacher-scholars. Teaching and research/scholarship/creative expression are mutually supportive activities at TCNJ. Candidates should be strongly committed to the teacher-scholar model, to maintaining both high quality teaching and an active and productive program of scholarship, and to encouraging and mentoring highly motivated students in intensive work both inside and outside the classroom. Faculty members are encouraged and supported in seeking external funding consistent with this mission. They also serve as academic advisors and have service responsibilities within their department, school, and the college. TCNJ supports its community of teacher-scholars through a progressive faculty workload model, generous internal grant and sabbatical programs, professional travel, engaging professional development programs, and other mechanisms. These intentional efforts support the recruitment, retention, and success of our faculty, particularly our teacher-scholars from groups traditionally underrepresented in academe.
Linkage to Two Thematic Clusters:
We are especially interested in candidates who could contribute to either or both of the TCNJ’s two thematic clusters (broadly defined): Data-/Cyber-connected disciplines and Social/Racial Justice. The hires will build-on and expand existing faculty strengths in these areas – with an array of institutional supports for them – bringing a cluster of 10 new teacher-scholars and practitioners across a range of academic fields/departments to TCNJ (Accounting; Computer Science; Counselor Education; Criminology; Management; Music; Political Science; Statistics; and Special Education, Language, and Literacy).
NJ First Act
Candidates should submit (a) a letter of application highlighting their interest and qualifications, (b) a curriculum vitae, (c) a statement of teaching philosophy/approach (no longer than 4 single-spaced pages), (d) a description of research interests and goals (no longer than 3 single-spaced pages), (e) a statement of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (no longer than 3 single-spaced pages), (f) unofficial transcripts (graduate and undergraduate), (g) evidence of teaching effectiveness, (h) a recent sample of your scholarly work, and (i) names and contact information for at least three professional references.
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. For full consideration, applications should be received with a priority date by September 10, 2022 with the search continuing until the position is filled.
Final offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation.
About the Department of Accounting and Information Systems:
Ranked among the best in the nation, the accounting program at TCNJ has a long-standing reputation for preparing exceptional accountants. Students can expect small, engaging classes in a collaborative setting—including a hands-on audit lab—and close faculty mentorship. Our graduates enjoy remarkable success, with high pass rates on the CPA exam and a 60 to 70 percent recruitment rate with public accounting firms.
The combination of a strong curriculum and talented students has earned TCNJ’s accounting program a reputation as one of the best in the nation. Building on the school’s required business core, the program consists of 10 accounting courses that integrate the study of the theory and current practice of accounting with research and computer applications. Classes are taught by full-time faculty who are active researchers and experts in specialized accounting fields, including auditing, cost, financial accounting, information systems, forensic accounting, and tax. Opportunities are available to collaborate with faculty on research projects, and students are encouraged to study abroad.
The TCNJ accounting program has a strong track record of successfully preparing students for employment in the public, corporate, not-for-profit, and government accounting sectors. The program also provides a pathway for those interested in licensure as a certified public accountant (CPA).
About the School of Business:
The School of Business at TCNJ is a leader in undergraduate business education. Over the years we have developed a tradition of graduating students well prepared for the changing business environment. Our philosophy is simple: A TCNJ business education will be an intellectually challenging and maturing experience that prepares students for their future careers and to be responsible members of the broader social community. Our student population consists of about 1,280 undergraduate students, and about 30 MBA students, with approximately 30% self-identifying as from underrepresented groups in higher education.
Along with learning about spreadsheets and marketing plans, business school students gain breadth by taking courses that recognize global challenges, the importance of civic responsibility, and the wonder of art and science. We also encourage our students to step outside the classroom for hands-on experiences such as internships and study abroad. We succeed because we admit students who see value in their own education, and we take time to foster their development. We do this within the TCNJ community, long known for its focus on educating the whole person.
We educate learners to become successful professionals and socially responsible citizens poised for positions of leadership. We contribute to the expansion of business and economics knowledge through theoretical, applied and pedagogical research, consistent with the TCNJ teacher-scholar model.
About The College of New Jersey:
Founded in 1855, TCNJ is a selective public institution that has earned national recognition for its commitment to excellence. TCNJ enrolls approximately 7,400 students, including 6,790 undergraduates and 610 graduate students, 30% of whom are self-described as members of groups traditionally underrepresented in academe. Strong curricular and co-curricular programming have helped foster a first-year to sophomore retention rate of 92%, a 4-year graduation rate of 75% (7th highest in the U.S. for public institutions), and a 6-year graduation rate of 87% (among the highest in the country). Five signature experiences are the hallmark of a TCNJ education: a personalized, collaborative, and rigorous education; undergraduate research, mentored internships, and field experiences; community engaged learning; global engagement; and leadership development. TCNJ has also received national recognition for the adoption and promotion of the teacher-scholar model for our faculty. A strong liberal arts core forms the foundation for programs offered through TCNJ’s seven academic schools—Arts and Communication; Business; Education; Engineering; Humanities and Social Sciences; Nursing and Health Sciences; and Science. TCNJ has a strong Phi Beta Kappa chapter—an honor shared by less than 10 percent of colleges and universities nationally.
