Job Description

Function/Duties of Position

• Largely autonomous: Analyze expenses and revenues for the Center for Developmental Health and the Moore Institute, compare to prior years and expected amounts, analyze budget variances on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. Explain differences from budget, forecast expenses and revenues for better departmental planning, develop and streamline internal financial processes, work on automation of reports using Cognos and Oracle, occasionally show other financial professionals how to use the tools available to develop similar processes for tracking and reporting.
• Forecast and analyze expenses and revenues for individual grants and departmental budgets, anticipating possible future events and variables that may occur to assist in departmental planning. Make recommendations regarding how to best use resources to meet desired outcomes.
• Produce and analyze monthly and quarterly reports to Director of Operations and Director of the Center for Developmental Health & the Moore Institute, explain variances, future expectations, do cost-benefit analysis to make recommendations. Must separately account for multiple sectors/activities of the departments that are often embedded within the same account, in order to report on and evaluate the costs and successes of those areas. The result is complex reporting combining both OHSU and foundation accounts, keeping earmarked/restricted funds separate from general, and eliminating the transfers between OHSU and foundation funds for reporting purposes.
• Prepare and make recommendations for annual Center for Developmental Health and Moore Institute budgets, use projections of costs and revenues to help with departmental long-term financial planning. Analyze budget and recommend new ways to improve efficiency and minimize costs.
• Evaluate and analyze federal and foundation grant finances and guidelines, responsible for financial compliance and financial reporting to agencies. Contact external funding agencies to clarify guidelines and make recommendations on how to proceed in various grant scenarios. Assist other financial professionals with understanding the grant guidelines, tools available, and processes developed to track and report grants.
• Produce reports of expenses and revenues each month applying generally accepted financial principles, make month-end adjustments.
• Make recommendations for wording in contracts, then complete contracts with outside entities.
• Approve purchase orders and credit card reconciliations, review for proper coding, pay invoices.
• Other miscellaneous duties as assigned, sometimes complex assignments that are not part of the usual processes.

Required Qualifications

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field from an accredited college or university

Experience:

• Minimum of 2 years of progressively responsible relevant work experience.

Job related knowledge, skills, and abilities (competencies):

• Must be highly proficient with the use of computers, including database and spreadsheet applications.
• Intermediate spreadsheet skills, including complex functions, formulas and formatting. Understanding of financial reporting concepts such as cost accounting and net present value analysis.
• Must be able to work independently with limited supervision.
• Communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to consult with internal and external customers regarding matters/issues which may be sensitive in nature.
• Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

• Healthcare experience, Grants and Foundation accounting experience preferred.

Job related knowledge, skills, and abilities (competencies):

• Oracle and Cognos knowledge.
• Prior Academic Health Center or relevant financial specific experience performing analysis related to operational improvements and business cases.

Additional Details

This position works independently with limited supervision in a busy environment with interruptions, multiple demands, priorities and interactions with faculty, researchers and administrators. Must be able to travel to all campus worksite locations, including using the tram. Occasional evening and weekend work.

Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms. Heavy use of computers.
