We are seeking a Director of DEI, Finance & Administration (F&A) who is a vision-driven leader focused on continuously “raising the bar” to build and support the F&A organization’s strategic initiatives. As a key leader in the F&A organization, they must possess exceptional communication and relationship building skills, and be able to build consensus across a broad range of functions with varying views and opinions in a highly decentralized environment.
The Director of DEI is a senior-level management position reporting to the Chief Business Officer. To ensure alignment with the University’s broader DEI commitments and initiatives, this position will dually report to the Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer.
Serving as a member of the F&A senior leadership team, this person will lead the development and implementation of proactive diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives which will support the university’s F&A organization. In addition, they are responsible for executing on F&A’s ~~~/ as a part of the University’s Second Roadmap on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. They will lead the development of a vision and effective strategy that champions the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive environment. Their engagement will primarily be with leadership and staff to build a welcoming and inclusive culture and will assess potential barriers to strategic initiatives regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion. They will oversee the department’s /unit’s diversity efforts and initiatives and may play a lead role in evaluating the current practices and culture of F&A.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Establish and lead an F&A DEI Council in partnership with Human Resources and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) to regularly obtain feedback, share resources, update DEI strategies, help coordinate events and listening sessions, and measure/share goals broadly across F&A.
Execute on the ~~~/ of embedding DEI principles in all areas of F&A by establishing a coordinated initiative and related DEI strategic planning process across its divisions, with measurable goals, transparent assessment and sharing of results with all staff.
Support the University’s adoption of inclusive practices in its procurement function, including supplier diversity and sustainability efforts.
In partnership with ODI, plan, guide, and provide leadership and professional development and training for F&A and advise the EVP and F&A senior leaders on DEI matters.
Create a hiring plan for F&A to increase diversity.
In partnership with Human Resources, assess and develop policies, practices and programs that support efforts to recruit and retain a diverse workforce.
In partnership with ODI, collaborate across the F&A organization to implement, and monitor programs designed to ensure fair and equitable treatment.
Promote F&A’s commitment to a climate of DEI through interactions with individuals and agencies inside and outside the organization.
Gather, research, and analyze data to inform decision-making in F&A.
Participate in and advise F&A leadership regarding the processes utilized to recruit and retain members from underrepresented groups.
Work with the Office of Institutional Equity to reinforce the value of diversity, to report harassment, and support groups impacted by negative treatment and/or discrimination.
In partnership with the F&A Communications Manager, revise and update communication on the F&A website, social media pages, job descriptions, internal documents and other publications/messages to ensure use of non-discriminatory language.
Act as a consultant across F&A and make sure all voices are heard.
Utilizing the results from climate surveys and discussions with staff, craft regularly updated DEI Strategies to be responsive to feedback from survey results.
Ensure best practices and resources are shared and implemented across F&A.
Demonstrated ability to design and articulate a strategic vision and proven experience with driving that vision throughout an organization.
A recognized thought-leader on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to present recommendations and proposals in a concise and understandable manner and thereby win the confidence of others.
Ability to handle diverse responsibilities and be a strategic leader while also being hands-on.
Highest level of personal integrity to inspire confidence, respect, and trust.
Ability to build creditability, communicate and influence at all levels of the university.
High level of diplomacy and cultural and political sensitivity.
Demonstrated leadership and facilitation skills.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree required.
Five years of related experience, progressively responsible administrative or leadership related to diversity, equity, and inclusion; program development and assessment experience is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience leading a diversity, equity, and inclusion council, committee, or board in an educational environment.
Previous experience working in higher education.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
