FINANCE MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION

Catalina Museum for Art & History (CMAH) seeks an entrepreneurial, planful, mission-minded Finance Manager to creatively provide the leadership, strategic direction, management, and coordination for all museum finance matters. These matters include oversight of accounting, budgeting, and financial planning for a rapidly growing museum budget of $1.6M. This roll carries primary responsibility for ensuring the museum has a set of robust internal controls and that such controls are followed in compliance with non-profit generally accepted accounting principles.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Position reports directly to the Executive Director and manages a full-time Office Manager. Works closely with the Board of Directors and staffs the Board Finance Committee. Member of the CMAH Senior Management Team.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Direct and coordinate financial planning and budget management
• Prepare monthly and annual financial statements
• Monitor and analyze monthly operating results against budget
• Manage the preparation of financial outlooks and financial forecasts
• Recommend benchmarks for measuring the financial and operating performance
• Oversee daily operations of the finance and accounting department
• Demonstrated proficiency with QuickBooks
• Manage and oversee all payroll, payroll reporting (3rdparty payroll service) and compliance with all local, state, and federal payroll laws and regulations
• Manage the financial reporting and requirements of all grants, governmental, corporate and/or individual contributions
• Coordinate financial audits and provide recommendations for procedural improvements
• Prepare and present bi-monthly financial overview to the Finance Committee and board of trustees
• Be the primary interface to the bank

COMPETENCIES AND WORK EXPERIENCE

• Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including non-profit Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in finance, accounting or business administration with strong accounting experience – five (5) to ten (10) years. CPA desirable but not required
• Financial management in the non-profit arena strongly desired
• Knowledge of automated financial and accounting reporting systems
• Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements, and projections
• Working knowledge of short- and long-term budgeting and forecasting, rolling budgets, and departmental profitability analysis
• Experience with Government contracts and grants budgeting
• Ability and comfort in communicating to management, to a board, and to outside third parties
• Manage cash flow and forecasting by working with others to develop cash flow projection process and reporting mechanisms that include minimum cash thresholds to meet operating need
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Inspiring our communities.” is guided by CMAH’s mission to collect, preserve, and promote the culture and history of Santa Catalina Island and to bring unique exhibitions to Catalina.

Located in the heart of Avalon, CMAH offers the best in art and history exhibitions, music and dance performances, lectures by guest speakers, and the finest in silent, documentary, and international film. CMAH preserves the island’s historic archive and provides engaging educational programs that serve 4,000 island residents and more than 1 million people who visit Catalina annually. The museum’s education programs encourage K – 12 students to enjoy the creative process as they think critically, problem-solve, engage with CMAH’s unique collection, and embrace opportunities for innovative thinking.

Collection strengths include archeological artifacts, ceramics produced by Catalina Clay Products, the single largest photographic archive and travel ephemera related to island history, paintings and prints of historical interest, and an extensive collection of Plein Air paintings.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $40.00 – $45.00 per hour
