Description
The SVP of Finance, BNA will be responsible for key components of the Finance function for Bunzl North America (approximate annual revenue $8.5 billion). Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, North America, this individual will optimize the internal financial activities using a commercial, “hands on” approach to make a positive impact on growth and profitability of the business.
The SVP of Finance will lead the company in developing and analyzing financial strategy alternatives, recommending courses of action, serving as an advocate for change, leading the annual budget process, making recommendations regarding M&A activity, and executing agreed-upon initiatives such as cost alignment programs. It is expected that this role will participate broadly in strategic, operational, and financial discussions both in North America and as required with Bunzl plc.
This role is based in St. Louis, MO.
Responsibilities
Leads a rigorous and disciplined budgeting and forecasting process to provide analytical insight to management decision makers. Supports the development of the strategic plan and assists in driving well-defined targets; establish metrics and monitoring systems that maintain accountability and manage risks.
Responsible for the control environment across North America including establishing and maintaining policies, key control activities/compliance, and management/employee training. Liaise with Bunzl Group Director of Internal Controls and Group Audit Director.
Is proactively engaged in the ongoing operational and organizational initiatives to improve profit margins and financial returns, in areas such as gross margin/pricing management, restructuring, cost control, working capital and cash management.
Ensures that financial and management accounts (reports/commentaries) comply with regulations and Group policies and are produced in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner.
Ensures excellent levels of credit control and balance sheet management.
Works with the CFO and group to qualify acquisition targets, including taking a lead role in the financial due diligence and closing process. Ensure timely integration into the finance reporting and controls post-acquisition.
Delivers timely analysis of performance against projections. Ensures that financial planning and analysis is a core competency for the organization. Works towards further developing best practices in financial management, measurement, and reporting across the Business Area to measure and report financial performance through profitability and return on capital key performance indicators.
Develops excellent working relationships with external auditors and group head office finance department to ensure smooth monthly, half year and year end reporting.
Takes the lead for BNA banking relationships. Manage the banking function to include appropriate processes and controls, including integration of acquisitions into BNA banking relationships and processes.
Oversee the property and casualty insurance risk management function, including making decisions about choice of insurance providers, level of risk and retention, and integrating acquisitions into BNA programs.
Provides leadership to the financial organization, ensuring that the necessary resources e.g., people, IT systems and technologies are in place to ensure appropriate levels of financial control are maintained across the Business Area. Develops the finance staff, identifying any training opportunities and coaching them within their roles.
Immediate/Near term Accomplishments
Gain support of the CFO establishing oneself as a key finance leader and advisor.
Learn the business and lead assigned Finance/Accounting functions to develop as a near term potential successor to CFO.
Assess the skills/ability and capabilities of the incumbent financial team, develop a plan to evolve staff over time and recruit added resources, as necessary.
Build strong, trust-based relationships with peers. Develop sound understanding of the key challenges facing each unit and how the financial function will support activities.
Learn the Bunzl business from a Sales/Marketing and Operations perspective. Meet with regional business leaders and develop a thorough understanding of a P&L from a business, division, and corporate perspective.
Demonstrate capabilities working across functional lines to maximize value.
Understand the requirements of the parent company and build up relationships with functional team including Bunzl Group Finance Director, Group Directors of Internal Controls/Audit and Group Financial Controller.
Assess technology-driven opportunities to streamline financial operations, and support Shared Services organizations, etc.

Key selection criteria and ideal experiences
Strong academic and professional credentials : an undergraduate degree in accounting, finance or related field is required; a master’s degree and a Certified Public Accounting (CPA) license are desirable.
Financial leadership experience: 15+ years’ experience in financial positions of increasing scope and responsibility, including commercial finance and corporate controller roles in larger companies and CFO roles in smaller companies. It would be desirable to have experience of working for a global company in a corporate environment.
Prior public accounting or audit experience preferred.
Related industry experience: Significant experience with one or more nationally dispersed, multibillion dollar, multi-unit enterprise in the business-to-business space. It would be desirable if these companies have a history of both organic and acquisition growth and an overseas parent.
Deep functional knowledge : Direct exposure to strategic financial planning and analysis, managing treasury, financial reporting/accounting and mergers and acquisition activities. Experience leading a direct P&L a major plus.
