RESPONSIBILITIES: Manage the overall operational, budgetary, and financial responsibilities and activities of the organization. As a team member, exemplify Zoo Knoxville’s core values through interactions with guests and fellow team members. Mentor members of the Finance Team. Prepare, generate, and review monthly financial statements, account reconciliations, analyze variances, and ad hoc reporting. Review and approve all financial accounting entries, accruals, revenue recognition, deferred entries, sales tax returns, and other financial reporting. Prepare presentations for finance and board meetings. Work with managers, curators, and directors to develop and analyze departmental budgets. Ensure all procedures and documentation are created and current. Ensure and maintain proper documentation for audits (financial, retirement, and workers comp audits). Serves as primary coordinator for financial audit with external audit firm in absence of Chief Financial Officer. Oversee timely and accurate reporting of benefits, taxes, and retirement related to payroll processing. Assist Chief Financial Officer in software implementation related to Zoo Knoxville’s financials. Knowledgeable about compliance of payroll and finance rules and regulations to ensure proper internal/external reporting. Serve as backup in the absence of Controller. Other duties and tasks as requested or required by the Chief Financial Officer or President & CEO. This individual will present a professional and neat appearance at all times. The attire will be the standard Zoo Knoxville uniform or business casual attire. A nametag will be worn at all times when representing this position.
QUALIFICATIONS: Must be at least 21 years of age. Must have a valid state issued driver license. A degree in accounting, finance, or equivalent work experience. Must have working knowledge of accounting and general accounting practices. Background in non-profit account is helpful. Ability and proven track record to work independently, supervise staff, self-motivated, high degree of accuracy, dependability, and confidentiality. Legible handwriting, good written and oral communication skills, and organized. The ability to react quickly, effectively and logically and meet deadlines. Significant experience in Microsoft Office products. Helpful software experience including Galaxy Point of Sales, Blackbaud Raiser’s Edge, and Sage Accounting/Payroll/Fixed Assets, or other accounting software. Requires flexibility, excellent interpersonal skills, project coordination experience, and the ability to work well with all levels of internal management and staff, as well as outside clients and vendors. Demonstrate ability to exercise mature judgment in maintenance of confidential business matters and the treatment of sensitive information.
WORKING CONDITIONS: As an employee of Zoo Knoxville, you must possess English communication skills as well as the ability to communicate using a 2-way radio, email and telephone. The position hours vary depending on business needs and will require weekend and some holiday shifts. Depending on the specific tasks, this position will be required to work within close proximity of exotic and domestic animals and must be aware that there are dangers inherent in working under those conditions.
