The Finance Manager is responsible for driving profitability within a defined business unit. This role requires interaction with executive leadership and is a very visible role throughout the business unit. Key responsibilities include financial reporting, contract and finance management, financial planning and governance, and people management.
The role won’t interact daily or monthly with customers however Finance Managers need to be prepared to be a point of escalation.
The actual reporting element is not a huge amount. The month-end process does require some reporting naturally, mostly looking at opportunities and risks, assessing issues as one-offs vs. larger issues, etc.
Contract and Finance Management is around the understanding of contracts, where all the back-end stuff is happening (billing appropriately, awarding rebates appropriately, opportunities to add services/revenue streams, etc.). There is an element of governance however these are not controllership roles – a lot of previous controllers will apply to these roles, and they tend to be missing a lot of the ability to business partner and are too governance focused.
This is a critical part of the role, putting together a reliable forecast especially.
People Management is an interesting component; the role will have at least one direct report and possibly more but what’s critical is that they can influence people throughout the business line. They need the ability to drive results throughout the business line.
They expect this person to get up to speed fairly quickly. They’ll get good coaching for month-end as that can take time to get your head around, but after 3-4 months they should be fairly standalone in the month-end process. There are certain elements of the role you do less often, for example you are only doing the budget once, so there will be a few things that are ongoing.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:
Business partnership experience is preferred.
Experience with data analytics tools is preferred – Power BI for example.
MBA degree or CPA certification is a plus, not required.
