The Valparaiso YMCA is seeking a Director of Finance to oversee accounting, money management and auditing procedures.
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Serves as a member of the Y’s leadership team over financial and information technology functions, including financial matters, investments, risk management and legal compliance. Provides direction and leadership for the Y business operations and strategic initiatives, overseeing long-term information technology decisions and project implementation.
Qualifications
1. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field with a background in information technology management required.
2. Three+ years related experience in accounting and staff supervision required; experience with non-profit accounting preferred.
3. Understanding of General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) required.
4. Knowledge of general ledger and accounting functions and experience with computerized accounting software required; knowledge of SGA accounting software preferred.
5. Intermediate working knowledge of computer programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook required.
6. Excellent written and oral communication skills required.
7. Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills required.
8. Ability to manage competing priorities and work independently required.
9. Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
10. Ability to work with confidential matters required.
Essential Functions
Finance
1. Monitors monthly financial operations, prepares analysis, and gives guidance to operating staff on issues that affect financial outcome. Receives guidance from YMCA Treasurer concerning YMCA financial affairs.
o Creates income statements, balance sheets and other meaningful reports to assist with financial decision making.
2. Manages workflow and daily activities of accounting staff.
3. Acts as a backup to human resources in the area of payroll.
4. Oversees and certifies the annual audit and meets periodically with the outside auditors to maintain communications and keep them informed of changes in the Y. Ensures that current accounting standards and legal requirements are met.
5. Oversees preparation of reports to Board of Directors, YMCA of the USA, and governmental agencies and tax returns.
6. Oversees the development of the annual operating budget. Works closely with operations staff to ensure that budgets are well-planned, realistic, and prepared in a timely manner.
7. Manages tax-exempt bond transactions and files all necessary reports.
8. Establishes, maintains and/or monitors all banking and financing relationships and cash management.
9. Reviews all contracts and holds responsibility for record retention.
10. In partnership with the Director of Human Resources, negotiates all insurance policy renewals-workmen’s compensation, property, auto, liability, directors and officers, umbrella etc. Reviews and handles all incident and accident reports and any insurance related claims, other than workmen’s compensation claims
11. Reconciles balance sheet general ledger accounts and maintains supporting ledgers
12. Coordinates month end closing; prepares and analyzes the monthly financial statements
13. Responsible for key financial systems set up, training of users and providing continual support to ensure that best practices and maximum efficiency is achieved.
14. Responsible for year-end closings, audit, tax returns, budget, financial analysis and YUSA reporting.
15. Assists with projects included but not limited to adhoc reporting, insurance renewals/claims, internal auditing, leases/contracts and grant assistance.
Information Technology
1. Manages and oversees all aspects of information systems. Oversees IT security, including compliance with information security regulations.
2. Evaluates issues pertaining to information systems for strategic planning and innovation.
Works in tandem with IT specialist to research areas of technology that relate to the YMCA’s needs and make recommendations.
3. Develops and monitors budgets related to information technology. Monitors the costs involved in maintaining and improving information systems, including equipment and software. Evaluates and recommends technology purchases based on the YMCA’s needs.
4. Oversees IT vendor contracts.
Finance and IT
1. Follows emergency procedures and safety precautions. Follow procedures for reporting all accidents, incidents and hazards.
2. Adheres to all policies, rules, and regulations as outlined in employee handbook and other communications. Obtains and maintains required training(s).
3. Accepts additional assignments as deemed appropriate, within the scope of the job description.
