The Finance & Accounting team creates the framework for all financial activity for USC Auxiliary Services. Finance & Accounting maintains the fiscal integrity of all finances and works closely with the business units to insure proper controls, policies and procedures are in place to protect the assets of the University. We are a team of analytical thinkers, problem solvers and spirited Trojans. With a unit as large as Auxiliary Services, no task is too big, or too small, for our team!
We are seeking a Finance Manager to join our rapidly growing team.
The Opportunity:
The USC Bookstore has brick and mortar locations as well as an e-commerce presence. The bookstore sells a wide assortment of merchandise from apparel to computers. The finance manager will be responsible for the development of accurate annual and seasonal financial plans (sales, margin, and inventory turns) that support the merchandise strategy and financial objectives.
The Accountabilities:
Manage the accounting/financial staff and operations of a financial services department, or large financial unit in an administrative or auxiliary division or department. Set departmental goals and objectives and measures performance against goals. Establish departmental priorities.
Create and revise all components of a rolling merchandise forecast (sales, margin, receipts, inventory turns) and analyze performance at a category level
Provide thought leadership, analysis and insights into trends and recommendations for actions to maximize sales, margin and inventory productivity; analyze merchandise to determine cannibalization, improve SKU productivity and ensure inventory management of item/category.
Lead financial and accounting processes, such as month close, account reconciliations, and budget processes.
Directly or indirectly supervise all assigned subordinate staff, usually through multiple layers of supervisors. Recruit, screen, hire, orients and train staff. Evaluate employee performance and provides guidance and feedback to assigned staff. Counsel, discipline and/or terminate employees, as required.
Training and development of accounting/finance staff.
Plan and administer departmental budget. Provide historical data and projections as required for budget development and planning.
Monitor, review and verify accounting records and transactions for accuracy, timeliness and adequacy of supporting documentation. Ensure compliance with internal policies, agency rules and regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles.
Oversee account reconciliations and production of regularly scheduled summary reports, income and financial statements for assigned accounting operations. Analyze reports for accuracy prior to distribution.
Supervise the collection and formatting of financial data for special management studies and requests. Provide financial data with explanations and interpretation as requested by management.
Coordinate the development and maintenance of electronic systems and procedures. Provide direction and input for the development of accounting applications, reports, forms, records and documented procedures.
Examine and evaluate internal methods and procedures for adequacy of controls. Note weaknesses or deficiencies and implements corrective actions. Ensure departmental compliance with all applicable policies and procedures.
Advise on university financial policies and procedures, agency laws and regulations, and generally accepted accounting principles.
The Qualifiers
Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree
Minimum Experience: 5 years
Minimum Field of Expertise:
Senior or lead bookkeeping/accounting experience with directly related college study.
Thorough knowledge of established accounting principles, methods, practices and terminology used in financial/accounting and statistical recordkeeping work.
Ability to train, evaluate and supervise the work of employees.
The qualified candidate must be a self-starter who is able to work with the operational and financial aspects of USC Bookstores retail business. Key success factors will include but are not limited to:
Experience as a finance professional in the retail or merchandising industry a must.
Building and maintaining trusted relationships with operations and finance and accounting leaders.
Demonstrated ability to participate in finance and accounting processes and work well in a fast-paced environment.
Thorough knowledge of inventory accounting, demonstrated abilities on inventory control and COGS improvement.
Demonstrates analytical, problem solving and effective communication skills.
What We Prefer:
Preferred Education: Master’s degree.
Preferred Experience: 7 years.
Preferred Field of Expertise: University financial policies, procedures and systems.
Familiarity with Netsuite preferred
