Job Summary
The Senior Director is a member of the Associate Vice President of Financial Services’ leadership team and plays a key strategic and advisory role. The leadership team includes the University’s Controller (also a Senior Director), the Senior Director for Research Management and Compliance, the Senior Director for Procurement and Supply Chain Services, and the Administrative Manager for Financial and Business Services.
The Senior Director will build and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholder areas across the University and UUHC to ensure that training and communication is effective and efficient.
This is a diverse organization and employees prosper in a team-oriented environment that emphasizes the values of communication, professionalism, service, stewardship and engagement. We are looking for equity-minded applicants who represent diversity and who demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds present in our community and campus.
This position requires the candidate to be physically on campus in Salt Lake City, Utah, consistent with a hybrid work schedule.
Responsibilities
Under administrative direction of the University’s Associate Vice President of Financial Services, the Senior Director has the overall responsibility for the following:
Financial Shared Services – while an extensive shared services approach to finance functions (e.g. accounting, budget, procurement, and grants management) has not been implemented, this position will assess needs and opportunities for broadening shared services offerings that might range from consultation and support for filling departmental open finance positions to providing a myriad of financial services where departmental staff are not available. The Senior Director will work with key constituents across the University to assess needs and then develop a program in support of those needs.
Financial Services Communications – the Senior Director will be responsible for all outward facing communications related to systems, policies and procedures, changes, etc. for Financial Services as a whole. Financial Services’ stakeholders are diverse and include students, faculty and staff of the University as well as parents, vendors, and others. Our desire is for communication to be timely, relevant, understandable, and appropriate to the audience utilizing a variety of methods including email, websites, social media, and text messages. We are in the process of working with the University of Utah Marketing and Communications team on updating our websites; the Senior Director will play a key role in this effort and will lead changes going forward. In addition to written communication, the Senior Director will develop communication channels that allow us to reliably vet proposed changes and impart critical information when urgently needed.
Financial Services Stakeholder Training – the Senior Director will be charged with assessing training needs across campus for the functions Financial Services performs. They will oversee the development of training content including, as examples: videos, tutorials, and live training. They will assess the effectiveness of training in conjunction with the other Senior Directors and will utilize the knowledge of other Financial Services’ personnel in developing content. Internal training could take the form of “job shadowing” to understand what individuals do and to aid departments in creating training materials and job aids. It would also cover more generalized training for staff at different levels and/or responsibilities. Development and delivery of training content would be expected, but the team can also leverage existing training content available through other university departments like Human Resources.
Financial Services Internal Training – our ability to assist the University in achieving broad strategic goals includes our ability to recruit, grow, and develop a team of dedicated professionals. In conjunction with the rest of the FS Leadership team, the Senior Director will develop and oversee a variety of training programs for FS staff including oversight of the newly developed Financial Services Certificate program. The Senior Director will evaluate needs and identify opportunities for enhanced training and development.
Outreach – the Senior Director will identify opportunities for engaging stakeholders, soliciting feedback, and helping navigate policies and procedures applicable to Financial Services.
