Department Profile
The Office of Technology and Industry Alliances (TIA), within the Office of Research (OR) at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), manages intellectual property developed through UCSB research, executes agreements with industry partners that support research collaboration and relate to campus research activities (including MTAs, DUAs and NDAs), and performs outreach to both the campus community and industry sector concerning technology transfer and research activities at UCSB.
Campus intellectual property administration includes implementation of the University of California (UC) intellectual property policies, the evaluation and marketing of inventions and copyrightable works, the prosecution of patents, and the negotiation and administration of a variety of legal agreements related to the patenting and licensing of UCSB intellectual property.

Brief Summary of Job Duties
The Office of Technology and Industry Alliances (TIA) is responsible for the administration of intellectual property developed at the campus and the negotiation of certain agreements with the for-profit sector that relate to campus research activities.
The intellectual property administration includes implementation of the University of California intellectual property policies, the evaluation and marketing of inventions and copyrightable works, the prosecution of patents, and the negotiation and administration of a variety of legal agreements related to licensing intellectual property.
The negotiation and administration of industry-related agreements includes all agreements related to the support of research and scholarly training activities by for-profit entities, including, but not limited to, research agreements, material transfer agreements, collaboration agreements and confidentiality agreements.
TIA also performs outreach to both the campus community and industry sector concerning technology transfer and research activities at UCSB.
Under the general direction of the Associate Director for Licensing and Business Development, the Marketing Associate implements all aspects of TIA’s marketing program, including marketing of technology developed at UCSB, designing and maintaining TIA marketing materials, website development / maintenance and serving as the liaison to the other UC campuses on marketing related topics.

60% Marketing of UCSB Technology – Assist Licensing Officers in writing non-confidential invention summaries as well as assist with marketing of early stage inventions made by UCSB researchers in multiple disciplines from various areas of engineering to the biological sciences for the purpose of licensing the inventions to companies who will develop and sell products based on these inventions.
d) Upon identification of the group of potential licensees, draft and send marketing letters to solicit potential licensees, following up with potential licensees to assess interest, and (d) Working with inventors to identify and obtain materials to be included in the marketing process and to obtain technical information when requested by potential licensees.
Research activities will include the use of various software tools (University of California Office of the President’s NCD publisher, IN-PART, Pitchbook, Mailchimp, MeisterTask, Salesforce, etc.
and a variety of on-line sources of market, financial, industrial and scientific information; review of appropriate journals and newsletters;
printed materials; past licensing and research transactions with the University of California system, and consultation with the inventors and others.
15% Marketing Materials – Design and maintain all TIA marketing materials including, but not limited to, the TIA website, available technologies available for licensing database and TIA marketing brochures, both for general purposes and customized for specific events / opportunities / initiatives.
Design and maintain materials to promote brand management (logo, presentation and marketing material templates, etc.).
10% Marketing Database – Maintain accurate and up to date marketing records in marketing database and / or office e-files.
5% Outreach : Maintain accurate and up to date marketing records in marketing database and / or office e-files.
10% Special Projects : Other Special Projects as assigned by the Director or Associate Director.
