Who We Are
The Port Companies are in the business of helping entrepreneurs succeed. We started out developing coworking spaces, and we’re now the Bay Area’s oldest independent operator, and one of its largest. Since 2012 we’ve grown to include multiple business incubators, real estate development, ghost kitchens, event venues and a product lab. We’re the SBA’s manufacturing incubator for Northern California, cofounder of culinary incubator Food Inc, and founder of medtech incubator RNnovations. We designed some of the most distinctive office and event space in Oakland. We built the largest shared kitchen business in the East Bay. We’re a lean, agile, multi-disciplinary team that excels at unlocking the value of overlooked assets, to serve the startup community in creative and highly effective ways.
The Port’s business incubator, specializing in the development physical products. Not just a conventional investor, Port Labs directly provides rapid prototyping, engineering, marketing and operations support to its members and portfolio companies, in health tech, proptech and consumer specialties. Port Labs serves as the Northern California Manufacturing Incubator for the Small Business Development Corp. (SBDC), is the founding partner (with SBDC and Port Kitchens) of groundbreaking culinary incubator Food Inc, and is the founding partner of RNnovations, a nursing systems and device innovation hub.
Exclusively in Oakland since 2012, we’ve restored long-vacant historic buildings to create extraordinary workspaces and event spaces. We provide entrepreneurs an unparalleled array of resources including a makerspace, wellness studios, podcasting studio, marketing and prototyping services. As one of the few flex-office space operators to acquire and develop its own properties, our real estate development skills enhance our stability, competitive advantage and long-term growth. We are proud to be one of the top-rated coworking organizations in the country and a member of LExC, a select group of the world’s top independent coworking spaces.
Located across three Port Workspaces properties, Port Kitchens is the East Bay’s largest operator of shared commercial kitchens. Serving caterers, artisanal food producers, pop-ups and startups, we also provide certification training and mentoring to food entrepreneurs. We operate two premier event venues: the historic Overland Station at Jack London Square, and the Overlook Lounge, overlooking Lake Merritt, one of Oakland’s most attractive indoor-outdoor venues.
Who Will Love This Role
You’re ready for the next level of your profession. After years of varied experience across financial operations, you’re itching to dive into new fields and missions you can actually get excited about. You want to participate directly in startup growth opportunities. You enjoy interacting with entrepreneurs, new challenges and new products. You get satisfaction from improving systems, streamlining processes, and finding new insights. You’re diligent, exacting and focused, but get bored with the same subject matter. You’d rather work with 6 businesses than one, but care about long-term growth with a high-performance team. You’re ready to leverage your skills to help launch businesses, and share in the value they create.
What You Will Do
You’ll take charge of financial administration for three private operating companies and an investment partnership. You’ll also help set up systems and reporting for programs and projects within our incubators. Duties include payroll, incentive pay calculations, A/P, monthly reconciliations, expense analyses, custom revenue reports, state & local filings, project costing, partner reports and distributions, intercompany transfers & allocations, and cash flow projections. You’ll help administer corporate records, new incorporations, banking and related account setups. You’ll work directly with the heads of each Port company to continuously improve our systems and reporting, and closely with our CEO, whose background in tech, M&A, fund management, and real estate development offers exposure across disciplines.
What You’ll Love
A vibrant, friendly, close-knit community of freelancers, startups and small businesses, you’ll meet people working on something interesting nearly every day.
Exposure to multiple fields of business and steady flow of startups.
A 3.5-acre oasis-like roof garden, with 6,000 square foot private terrace overlooking Lake Merritt.
Steady stream of events available, both social and professional.
Unofficial: ping pong, pool, pinball, yoga, member lunches, free coffee and beer, slides, outdoor BBQ, giant hammocks, great parties, amazing people and much more.
