The Environment: Spectrum News is a 24-hour breaking news network which requires employees who are flexible and available to work various shift, including early morning, late evenings, weekends and holidays. What we’re looking for: Partner with MMJs to perform research, to find unique angles to stories, to locate central figures for our character-driven storytelling. Plan news coverage, special events and story idea development. Contribute to story ideas and advance developing stories with a focus on planning and coordinating immediate and long term coverage. Major Duties and Responsibilities Create stories and work with MMJs in finding, setting up, and researching character-driven future stories Work with managers to adjust schedules for last minute coverage Gather story ideas from MMJs, producers, and other sources Propose coverage strategy with at least one week in advance of daily news coverage Help plan daily and long term coverage Work on planning special projects for the future Monitor websites and social media sources Coordinate coverage of big stories and planned events with the Executive Producers and/or newsroom managers Develop sources within the community, including government agencies and public relations representatives Produce special segments on a daily basis May be asked to develop, write and edit news stories Participate in directing coverage plans under deadline pressure Develop daily talkbacks with people of interest Assists Planning Manager in the pursuit of information during breaking news situations Perform other duties as assigned Qualifications: Skill/Abilities and Knowledge Ability to read, write, speak and understand English Solid news judgment and passion for news Ability to develop sources Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities and work under time pressure deadline Must be able and willing to work different shifts and be flexible with schedule changes Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; ability to clearly communicate solutions; ability to relate well with diverse populations Ability to interface with internal company personnel Requires adaptability, enthusiasm, initiative and a positive approach to problem solving Must be able to work under time pressure deadlines, work different or extended shifts and flexible with schedule changes. Willing and able to work weekends and holidays Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Communication or comparable television work experience preferred 4 Years of experience in a television newsroom preferred 3 years previous experience as an Assignment Editor in a television newsroom preferred Our Culture: Every employee is an influencer and culture keeper.
