The R&D Tax Credit Manager is responsible for managing R&D Studies from start to finish and is responsible for identification, calculation, qualification, and documentation related to single-year and multi-year Credit claims. This position is intended to immediately support the R&D practice by working on active client engagements in a team environment. Candidates should have experience with the Federal R&D Tax Credit allowable under Internal Revenue Code Section (IRC) Section 41. The R&D Tax Credit Manager will be will be introduced to RKL’s R&D Study process and will receive training on an ongoing basis. The R&D Tax Credit Process engages and explores a wide variety of interesting clients many of which are actively creating exciting innovations in their respective fields. The Associate will have the opportunity to learn about numerous industries and business models as they support the R&D Tax Credit team.
The R&D Tax Credit Manager helps the R&D Tax Credit Practice on active R&D Studies in all four phases of the Study process including quantification of credit amounts, qualification of projects through participation in client interviews, and substantiation through technical drafting and deliverables. R&D Tax Credit Managers act as strategic consultants by providing feedback to clients and the R&D Tax Credit Service line members.
Responsibilities
- Work as part of a team reviewing information regarding various client operations including assisting with interviews related to research projects and research participants
- Organize and analyze project information including job costing, time sheet data, ledger information, and expense detail
- Prepare calculation workbooks based on client data input including wage information, employee information, contracted research expenses, and material expenditures
- Answer client calls and emails in a timely manner and with a solution-oriented approach
- Draft reporting deliverables based on information gathered during the interview process and technical documents provided by clients
- Coordinate with team members on ongoing Studies including internal updates, coordinating meeting times with client contacts, and managing the Study Process benchmarks and timelines
- Coordinate tax related projects and review prepared tax returns, working with a variety of entities such as corporations, partnerships, estates, trusts and non-profits across various industries
- Answer client calls and emails in a timely manner and with a solution-oriented approach
- Ensure client deliverables are completed within expectations
- Participate in continuous learning activities and active research to improve and develop technical expertise; apply learned concepts
- Collaborate with leader to identify opportunities for efficiencies and proactive engagement management
Education, Experience and Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Engineering, or a related degree is preferred; graduating students should have 150 credit hours and a GPA of 3.0 or above
- 5+ years’ experience of progressive tax consulting experience across a wide range of industries preferred
- 3+ years’ experience preparing R&D Tax Credit Studies is preferred
- Expert knowledge in individual, partnership and corporate tax laws and principles
- Prior experience in coaching and training entry-level consultants is required
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and execute, based on firm focus and future of the tax service line
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite products and technologically-savvy
- Self-motivated and willingness to enhance accounting and advisory knowledge
- Excellent attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects
