DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Accountant I classification performs professional accounting work with primary overall responsibility for fiscal aspects of a major program requiring separate financial statements and reports such as food services and other major District-wide funds. The Accountant II classification serves as the District Accountant and is responsible for developing, implementing and monitoring sound fiscal operations for the District.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform professional accounting work in accordance with prescribed accounting system and generally accepted principles of accounting. E
Plan, organize, analyze, and monitor fiscal activity and internal controls in assigned program to provide proper accountability and financial management. E
Analyze budget documentation to assure expenditures are properly charged and do not exceed appropriations; make recommendations accordingly; prepare projected salary and non-salary information. E
Analyze data and prepare projections, financial statements and reports providing statistical and financial information related to assigned program. E
Review and reconcile account coding of salaries, benefits, and other payroll entries; coordinate with payroll regarding balancing payroll data, identifying errors, and making adjusting entries. E
Prepare a variety of comprehensive financial statements and reports; prepare and maintain financial claims, records and reports for various accounting areas; maintain efficient and effective record-keeping systems and audit trails. E
Conduct research and prepare special studies as requested; analyze financial accounting data and make appropriate recommendations; analyze sales reports. E
Respond to inquiries and provide a variety of information and assistance to District and other personnel regarding budgets, accounts and related information; provide technical expertise and direction regarding accounting issues and discrepancies; coordinate activities with other departments and District personnel. E
Prepare, review and correct budget and expenditure transfers; verify account numbers and related information; prepare a variety of forms for the receipt of funds; analyze and prepare federal and state reimbursement claims assigned. E
Analyze, process, balance, and assure accuracy of accounts payable and accounts receivable; provide work direction and guidance to staff related to the accounts payable and receivable functions as assigned. E
Assist in the development and implementation of new or revised procedures and forms to assure efficiency and compliance with District policies and applicable governmental regulations; advise supervisor of unusual trends or problems and recommend appropriate corrective action. E
Assist with the development and management of assigned annual budget; create and maintain spreadsheets to monitor budget expenditures, review and verify available funds, and make adjustments as needed. E
Perform related duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business or related field and three years general accounting experience.
