Job Summary:
The Accounting Research team is at the forefront of key technical accounting matters and financing reporting requirements. The Accounting Research team supports various businesses across the organization including, but not limited to, customer operations, plant and market operations, Treasury and M&A. The Accounting Research team also provides technical accounting training to the organization, as needed.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Review transactions, contracts, investments and financing arrangements to determine the appropriate U.S. GAAP treatment utilizing FASB guidance and interpretations, research tools and other accounting literature and prepare written documentation on relevant conclusions
Provide research support to various teams on accounting topics related to acquisitions, dispositions, revenue recognition, leases, investments, debt issuances & refinancing, impairments, variable interest entities, equity compensation arrangements and various other topics
Monitor the standard-setting authorities for changes in U.S. GAAP or SEC reporting requirements and communicate changes to the accounting, finance and financial reporting teams
Provide technical accounting training on various topics to the accounting, finance and financial reporting teams
Assist in the identification, implementation and documentation of new accounting policies or updates to existing accounting policies for distribution to the company
Assist in integrating new accounting requirements into company accounting procedures
Interpret current accounting policies to provide clarification of accounting requirements
Assist in financial reporting reviews for the 10K and 10Q, as needed, to meet financial reporting deadlines and ensure disclosures are appropriate
Perform other duties as assigned
Working Conditions:
Open office environment
Hybrid work arrangement (3 days in-office, 2 days remote)
Some overtime could be required during quarterly and annual period filings or as special projects arise
Minimal travel required
Minimum Requirements:
BS in Accounting or Finance
Minimum of 4 years accounting and/or finance experience
CPA license or pursuing a CPA license
Knowledge in US GAAP and SEC reporting requirements
Experience in highly collaborative work environments
Demonstrated ability to work with various departments and individuals to resolve problems in a timely manner
Excellent written communication skills
Excellent verbal communication skills and ability to communicate technical concepts to non-finance colleagues in “plain English”
Detail-oriented with ability to manage conflicting priorities without sacrificing accuracy
Strong research skills, including familiarity with the FASB codification
Strong initiative and a process improvement mindset
Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in the energy or gas industry (whether retail or conventional) a plus
Background in public accounting, Big 4 firms a plus
