TITLE: Chief Development Officer
LOCATION: Alexandria, VA
REPORTS TO: President and CEO
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
The Chief Development Officer provides oversight of the entire Development team and manages several direct reports.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENT: 25% or as needed to fulfill the position requirements.
HOURS & SCHEDULE:
Generally, Monday – Friday, 9:00am to 5:30pm (minimum 37.5 hours within five (5) days per week); unless otherwise required or approved by management. The position is located at NCMEC HQ in Alexandria, VA and requires a hybrid in-office presence. Flexibility in scheduling, after-hours and weekend response, and collaboration with staff members and stakeholders.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the President & CEO, the Chief Development Officer (CDO) is a member of NCMEC’s Executive Leadership team and is responsible for leading the development operation and staff to increase private philanthropy efforts. The CDO will be responsible for developing and executing an ambitious development plan and fundraising strategy to advance NCMEC’s vital programs and services.
The Chief Development Officer is accountable for the planning, coordination, and execution of all fundraising priorities for NCMEC, including individual giving, foundation support, corporate partnerships, event sponsorships, external events or third-party partnerships, prioritizing unrestricted support to the organization’s mission. As the lead fundraiser for the organization, the CDO will work closely with the President & CEO and the Board of Directors to manage a portfolio of six-to-seven-figure prospects, prioritizing the development of a principal gifts pipeline.
This CDO role is ideal for a dynamic, results-driven, and well-organized development leader who has significant experience as a front-line fundraiser. The ideal candidate will have demonstrable success developing and implementing strategic plans while building and maintaining a portfolio of priority prospects. Strong communication skills are critical and the CDO must be committed to advancing NCMEC’s mission to ensure that all children have a safe childhood.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead the development team and support the staff to ensure that fundraising goals are met across key initiatives (individual, foundation, corporate, events, and external events).
Actively monitor team’s progress toward meeting individual KPI’s and metrics.
Provide frequent and timely status reports of fundraising progress to CEO and Executive team.
Develop, lead, attract, inspire, retain, and manage a diverse, talented, and high-performing team, holding everyone accountable for quantifiable high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results.
Guide staff in their respective areas of functional expertise.
Serve the role of coach, mentor, and leader of the development staff.
Manage a portfolio of six-to-seven-figure prospects, prioritizing the development of a principal gifts pipeline.
Enhance unrestricted funding, while generating new programmatic funding.
Ensure that strategies are clearly understood by all stakeholders and that the development office is achieving its strategic goals at an optimum pace.
Collaborate closely with the Chief Financial Officer and other Executive leaders to ensure alignment of fundraising strategy with organizational priorities.
Support the President & CEO with board engagement, management, and recruitment.
Work in partnership with the CEO and Board Chair to manage the Development and Marketing Committee of the Board of Directors.
Conduct quarterly meetings with the Development & Marketing Committee of the Board of Directors to ensure development goals are achieved while leveraging key stakeholders to advance fundraising goals.
Develop quarterly department projections to be utilized in board updates.
Conduct regular sphere-of-influence (SOI) conversations and develop individualized board action plans, with quarterly check-ins to ensure success.
Establish and maintain positive working relationships with all major funding sources.
Manage all work in accordance with NCMEC policies.
Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Demonstrated success managing a six-to-seven-figure portfolio of individual, foundation, and corporate supporters.
A proven track record in fundraising across various giving vehicles and managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Experience leading a team.
Strong analytical and prospect research skills.
Strong proficiency with fund-raising software tools and Salesforce is essential.
Ability to use data and CRM systems to set fundraising strategies, measure outcomes, and drive superior performance.
Ability to negotiate, persuade, and problem solve creative resolutions.
Demonstrated knowledge of principles, best practices and current trends of fundraising cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategy and tactics.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Superior organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills designed to meet the needs of a growing organization.
Ability to handle and maintain the integrity and confidentiality of highly sensitive material.
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Adaptability, flexibility, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Ability to work additional hours as needed to meet deadlines and manage workflow.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
Minimum of ten to fifteen (10-15) years non-profit leadership experience, managing a large, comprehensive, national fundraising program or comparable work is required.
Experience at non-profit organizations with diverse funding streams, specifically government grants, preferred.
