Job Summary
As a Staff Accountant, you will support the accounting and reporting functions for the Company’s investments as well as provide support to the statutory accounting team.
Duties and Responsibilities
* Continuously exhibit and uphold Core Values of Integrity, Accountability, Communication and Teamwork, Innovation and Customer Service
* Gain requisite knowledge of the Company’s investments and the relevant accounting for both statutory and GAAP reporting
* Prepare monthly journal entries to record investment activity and results
* Reconcile general ledger balances with external accounting service provider (Clearwater Analytics)
* Reconcile investment holdings with custodians
* Assist with management of investments held on deposit with state insurance departments
* Accounting for the Company’s private investment portfolio including equity method investments in renewable energy and limited partnerships
* Accruals for investment expenses including manager, custodian, and accounting service provider fees
* Assist in preparing investment analytics and supporting explanations
* Assist in the preparation of quarterly and annual statutory statements for five subsidiary insurance entities – prepare investment exhibits and footnotes, schedules D and BA, general interrogatories.
* Support statutory accounting team in other areas of the statements as needed
* Contribute on projects and in other areas to potentially include budgeting, forecasting, cash flow modeling, assisting with SEC filings, and holding company accounting
* Adhere to Company internal controls and accounting policies
* Provide client assistance for internal and external audits
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Working knowledge of GAAP, ledger, account reconciliation, audit/control procedures, cash, A/P, A/R, payroll, income tax, investment accounting, banking, and accounting systems
* Knowledge of Statutory Accounting and other aspects of insurance operations a plus
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Strong work ethic with a drive to succeed;
* High level of initiative and motivation
* Proactive self-starter who works well independently and in a team environment
* Strong analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail
* Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
* Effective decision-making skills and an ability to perform under deadline pressure
* Intermediate to expert level proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point)
Experience and Education
* Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably in Accounting
* Minimum of two years of experience in corporate and/or public accounting required
* Investment accounting experience or experience preparing statutory statements preferred
* Experience with Clearwater Analytics a plus
