COMPANY PROFILE
Grassroots Workshops has been providing flexible online workshops for teachers from education leaders they know, like, and trust since 2017. Our diverse group of more than 30 instructors offer workshops in mathematics, English, science, social justice, remote instruction, social emotional learning, technology, and STEM. Our customer base is primarily from the United States and Canada, but we’ve also served educators from dozens of countries. Our core values are:
Relationships are like roads: they take time to build but everything flows better once they’re there. Building relationships with our team, instructors, partners, and customers is crucial to our continued success.
Teams with diverse lived experiences are better equipped to see opportunities, avoid obstacles, and be prepared to adapt to change.
Merging our team’s best ideas through productive discourse often provides better results than what any single person could come up with.
Providing others with the support and resources they need helps them grow and allows us to become influential leaders they trust and respect.
Taking care of ourselves and our loved ones are our top priorities. We proactively work to ensure that we meet both our personal and professional needs.
If we’re not continually growing, we’ll have outdated skills, miss critical opportunities, and won’t realize our time has passed until it’s too late.
Check out our instructors and their workshops online at our website under “Browse Workshops”.
We strongly encourage people from underrepresented groups to apply.
What To Expect When Working With Us
Months 1 to 3
Your role will be to shadow a senior project manager, observe the processes we’ve detailed using the Asana project management software, ask questions, participate in team and instructor meetings, and learn how everything comes together. We have a supportive onboarding process that will be customized to prepare you for the different areas you need. You’ll also participate in our bimonthly “Learning Parties” where you get paid to learn about the topics of most interest to project managers.
Months 4 to 6
During this period of time, you will be assisting another project manager with their current instructors. You will likely be taking on small tasks related to the overall workshop without having to manage and be aware of the entire process. You will slowly be taking on more responsibilities as you feel comfortable with them.
There will be significant amounts of learning to be done so you feel prepared. This may include learning about software, professional development best practices, conversational techniques, and more. You should feel comfortable knowing that there will always be more to learn.
Months 6 to 12
During this period of time, you will likely be assigned one or more instructors of your own. A senior project manager will likely assist you, as needed, so that while you have full responsibility, you do not feel unsupported. By this time you will have more familiarity with the overall process as well as a constant realization that there’s always something new to learn. For example, you might feel comfortable with the techniques we use to ensure high quality video content, but your instructor might want to use a new video recording and editing software you’ve never heard of and need to quickly get up to speed on.
After One Year
After a year of working as a project manager, you will feel comfortable supporting instructors independently as they create their online workshop using our step-by-step process. There will always be questions to ask, and you know who to reach out to so you can quickly get the support you need to assist your instructor.
Remember that while instructors are experts in what they teach, they may have little to no experience sharing it via an online workshop. Like a personal trainer at a gym, they do the work but you’re the one by their side, encouraging them, showing them proper technique, and keeping them moving.
Your job will continue to be complex and require excellent interpersonal skills, an insatiable desire to learn quickly, the ability to keep track of a variety of small and large details, and the capacity to communicate and collaborate with all team members so everything is ready to go at the right time.
Availability and Type of Role
This part-time position may be done remotely from anywhere in the world, as long as your schedule is flexible around the United States morning, afternoon, and evening hours. Some time commitments increase as the Fall (near September), Spring (near February), and Summer (near May) semesters approach. We have a standing meeting on Wednesdays at 3 pm Pacific time that you must be able to attend.
There will be approximately 1 to 4 hours of work per week for each instructor you’re working with. This may also increase slightly to 3 to 7 hours of work per week for each instructor in the final months ahead of each registration period (Fall, Spring, and Summer). So, while you may have other responsibilities and clients, it is essential that you can be 100% dedicated to your instructors during each launch period.
Accordingly, the total hours you work will vary based on how many instructors you support and how much support your instructor needs (for example instructors repeating a workshop tend to need significantly less support than those running a workshop for the first time). You may also have other mutually agreed upon work that is not directly related to supporting instructors.
Also note that our instructors are often full-time educators, so you may find that the instructors are busy during the day (generally United States time zones) and can only collaborate outside of standard school day hours. So, flexible availability is needed.
Benefits
Compensation is $30.39/hour during your introductory period (3 months); After successful completion of your 90-day introductory period, your wage will increase to $35.46/hour. Additional benefits for part-time employees include a SIMPLE IRA retirement savings plan with 100% employer match up to 3%, and a $30 monthly stipend to continue your own professional development and support your life-long learning.
