In addition to its hospitals, Duke Health has an extensive, geographically dispersed network of outpatient facilities that include primary care offices, urgent care centers, multi-specialty clinics and outpatient surgery centers.
General Description of the Job Class
This position is responsible for overseeing Duke University Hospital (DUH) capital project development and approval, understanding and analyzing the DUH statement of operations for assigned Strategic Service Lines, coordinating physical inventory audits with General Accounting and Supply Chain. The position will be required to understand the many facets of DUH both financially and operationally in order to effectively provide advisory and consultative support. Supervisory responsibilities are expected.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Partner with operational and clinical teams to prepare business plans for capital investments, including complex financial models, market assessment, capacity analysis, NPV, and executive summaries.
Manage the development of annual capital plans for DUH, keeping in mind cash flow targets for the organization.
Oversee operations of the finance department for assigned service lines, set goals, and objectives and design a framework by which these can be achieved.
Provide a full range of management support to assist in the interpretation and analysis of financial, operational, and clinical performance measures. Facilitate and/or assist in the preparation of clinical and operational performance presentations.
Prepare and review monthly performance dashboards against key business metrics, understand underlying transactions and investigate areas for improvement, advising on strategies to course correct. Conduct reviews and evaluations for cost reduction opportunities.
Prepare and review monthly analysis of the income statement, including actual to budget review. Understand underlying transactions on income statement and investigate areas for improvement.
Work closely with hospital operations personnel to understand and document operational, financial and accounting issues. Assist in the review of departmental processes. Identify areas for improvement across and within processes, solving to root cause. Respond in a timely fashion to requests for information and issue resolution.
Partner with General Accounting and Supply Chain Management to coordinate periodic physical inventory audits and inventory adjustments.
Remain proficient in industry standards and trends and subsequent related impacts to the enterprise. Partner with service line leaders to articulate effects from changing clinical, reimbursement and cost of care environments.
Responsible for personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, performance appraisal, promotions, transfers and vacation schedules.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education
BA/BS in Business or Accounting or related business field.
Experience
This position requires three years or more of experience in financial accounting and reporting.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
MBA, MHA or Certified Public Accountant is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Generally accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Distinguishing Characteristics of this Level
This position will be required to work on simultaneous projects with minimal supervision from Finance leadership.
Position will work closely on numerous projects with Financial Analysts, other DUHS Finance Managers, Corporate Finance, and General Accounting.
Position will work closely with operational leaders on several projects; therefore, professionalism and knowledge of business are important at a high level.
Position is also responsible for preparing documentation; therefore, good written communication skills are important.
