Position Summary
The Finance Director is responsible for the management of the organization’s finance and accounting activities across multiple programs, contracts, and grants. This includes oversight of accounts payable and receivable, budgeting, production of financial statements and reports. The Finance Director is also responsible for the annual audit and maintaining internal controls, while overseeing financial systems and related compliance requirements. The Finance Director must have experience in nonprofit accounting with government and non-government contract and grant management as well as the capacity to set and deliver outcomes in a fast-paced environment. The Finance Director will work closely with the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Financial Officer and the Board of Directors in determining long-term financial goals and developing strategies to achieve the financial objectives of Covenant House Alaska.
Essential Functions
Mentor and supervise the Assistant Controller in the oversight of all the day-to-day accounting operations including oversight of accounts payable and receivable, payroll, grant accounting, maintenance of the general ledger and information reporting and returns.
Analyze and present financial reports (income statements and balance sheets) in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements to executive staff and the Board of Directors.
Lead the annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes and produce monthly budget versus actual reports.
Attend and present at CHA Board meetings and Board Finance committee meetings.
Execute orders and resolutions of the BOD and Corporate office as applicable.
Interface with the Board of Directors through various committees and task forces.
Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.
Manage capital equipment, assets, leases and depreciation.
Assists office improvements, reviewing bids, implementation and capitalization.
Develop appropriate investment strategies and oversee their implementation.
Review and approve financial reports for foundation and other funder grants; oversee the maintenance of shared grant reporting calendar due dates and submissions, including all required financial deliverables as stated per grant awards and contracts.
Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; periodically update the organization’s accounting manual.
Remain up-to-date on best practices in nonprofit finance, business systems, and internal control measures, and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
Experience
Financial management and supervisory experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
Knowledge of cost accounting, budgeting, income, cost analysis, and financial modeling. Working knowledge of audits, and other regulatory requirements in the financial field
Non-profit accounting experience strongly preferred. Experience with federal grants management helpful.
Managerial experience with non-profit social service and/or health care agency providing services under contract with the state of Colorado a plus.
Expert computer skills, including Office, with advanced proficiency in Excel and accounting systems.
High-level analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
Superior written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to translate financial concepts to colleagues who do not necessarily have a finance background.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team to support organizational goals.
Thrives in a busy and diverse work environment.
Possess a current and valid Driver’s License.
Have a good driving record.
Pass federal, state, and local background check investigations.
