Position Summary
Founded in 2012, the Data Science Institute at Columbia University is singularly focused on advancing the state of the art in data science with the goal of transforming all fields, professions and sectors the application of data science, and to ensure the responsible use of data to benefit society. The Data Science Institute trains the next generation of data scientists, develops innovative technology, fosters collaborations in advancing techniques to interpret data and address pressing societal problems, and works closely with industry to bring promising ideas to market.
Reporting to the Director of Finance and Grants Management of the Data Science Institute (DSI), the Finance Manager will support the financial administration of the DSI’s unrestricted gifts, endowment and other internal CU programmatic funds. The incumbent will work with the DSI leadership team, faculty across the University and DSI administrative staff to ensure the department operates in a compliant and financially sustainable manner.
Responsibilities
Uses University and institutional systems and software to collect data, prepares detailed and high-level financial reports and perform benchmarking analyses. Develops and provides on-demand reports as required.
Conducts accurate analyses and reporting related to expenditures on our unrestricted, gift, endowment and other internal CU programmatic funds, and other financial activities exercising significant independent judgment.
Works independently and collectively to prepare reconciliation/collection reports, ensures timely monthly completion, and maintains supporting documentation for reconciliations in an organized manner (electronic/paper, as needed) and other projects and reports as assigned.
Identifies, researches, and resolves discrepancies discovered in the monthly reconciliation/collection process; this includes interpreting financial reports, understanding system interactions, and maintaining constructive working relationships with Central CU financial office and University-wide administrative colleagues.
Ensures that the accounting systems accurately reflect program or departmental activity, including revenue and expenses, accruals, deferrals; reconciliation with internal records, internal systems and university systems, both financial and other. Assists in the financial management and reporting of Institutional funds, gifts, and endowments.
Assists with identifying, researching, and ensuring compliance with University financial policies and procedures. Responsible for independently identifying and disseminating financial internal controls policies and procedures as needed.
Works on special projects as assigned by DSI Leadership.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent and 3-5 years related experience required.
Must possess strong analytical skills, critical thinking, and practical problem-solving abilities.
The candidate should have outstanding financial analysis and modeling skills including advanced Microsoft Excel skills – such as pivot tables, v-look up, functions.
Demonstrated computer proficiency (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), including an in-depth knowledge of spreadsheets.
Must be able to exercise significant independent judgment, have a passion for excellent customer service and commitment to exceptional quality.
Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Experience with Columbia systems is highly preferred.
Strong listening skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work closely and effectively with a diverse group of University faculty and administrators, are essential to this role.
Ability to work as a member of a collaborative team while exercising significant independent judgment is essential.
Must enjoy working in a team environment that values individual contributions and also strong collaboration and cooperation.
Proficient or Advanced Proficiency in MS Excel and other MS suite programs and file keeping and shared drive database.
Ability to meet deadlines and maintain required confidentiality.
Occasional evening or weekend work may be required, particularly during seasonal budget cycles.
