Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director for Operations will serve as an organizational leader in operational strategy, including Financial, Investment and Human Resource Management.
The successful candidate will have a strong grounding in social justice, particularly related to anti-black oppression, and a deep commitment to transforming the scale, impact, and quality of efforts to advance racial and social equity. The ideal candidates will have a high level of emotional maturity, high tolerance for complexity, the ability to adapt quickly to change, and success working effectively in a collaborative team environment with persons from diverse cultural, social, and ethnic backgrounds – including internationally.
Responsibilities
Investment and Finance Management
Partner with the Executive Director in managing AFRE’s transition to becoming a 501c3 non-profit.
Lead the development of the financial and investment strategy of AFRE and create the steps and infrastructure needed to execute on it.
Provide guidance to Fund Manager.
Ensure that the needs of the board are being translated effectively to the Fund Manager.
Model future projections and scenarios to support the Governing Board in decision making.
Prepares and presents financial reports to the Governing Board.
Provides general support to the investment committee of the Governing Board.
Serve as the liaison on financial matters between AFRE and Columbia University.
Guide the Board and constituencies on being mission driven on financial and investment matters.
Support transparency around financial disclosures
Monitor the performance of the funds to ensure AFRE’s financial health.
Oversee management of finances, including budget development and monitoring spending, and providing approvals as appropriate.
2. General Operations
a. Partner with the Executive Director and the senior leadership team on a range of organizational development priorities to ensure that the non-profit organization has fitting systems, structures, and capacity transnationally, in both the United States and South Africa.
b. Assume primary operational responsibilities, including finance, risk management, compliance, miscellaneous legal and information technology.
c. Lead and oversee operational systems and processes that are robust, audit-ready, and proactively address operational challenges and needs to better support AFRE’s work.
d. Design and implement seamless, effective, and repeatable operational processes across all areas of the organization.
Human Resources
a. Collaborate with Senior Management in setting and driving organizational vision, operational strategy, and hiring needs.
b. Manages the development of transnational human resource operations.
c Guides the development of staff policies and procedures.
2. General Governance
a. Contributes to Board management, including working with the Executive Committee to plan Board meetings and supporting the work of other Board Committees as needed.
b. Serving as a thought partner to the Executive Director on the development of policies, procedures and an organisational culture that embodies AFRE’s values and vision.
3. Partnerships
a. Shares in engaging with key institutional partners to maintain productive relationships and manage risk.
b. Shares in communicating about AFRE’s work to internal and external stakeholders to build AFRE’s public visibility and strategic connections.
Minimum Qualifications
5 years of related experience; Bachelor’s degree /or equivalent related experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
At least 3 years of senior management experience in a key operational role in non-profits.
Demonstrable competency in investment management, strategic planning and business development
In-depth knowledge of different business functions such as finance (including budgeting)
Knowledge of auditing principles and risk assessment techniques
Working knowledge of IT, data analysis, and performance/operation metrics
Outstanding organizational and leadership abilities
Excellent interpersonal skills
Aptitude in decision-making and problem-solving
Knowledge of personnel management
Demonstrable openness to new approaches and continual spirit of learning
Excellent oral and written communications skills. Experience effectively presenting to senior leadership and/or board members.
Prior experience working in an international organization a plus
Prior experience working in a university context could be a plus
Start-up experience a plus.

Ability to conduct extensive hours of work at a computer with reasonable accommodations is required.
This position will require international travel.
