Bonita House, Inc. (BHI) is a well-respected nonprofit mental health agency with multiple sites in Alameda County and an operating budget of $10 million. It was founded in 1971. BHI is also a social rehabilitation agency providing a full range of Medi-Cal services to adults with co-occurring serious mental health and substance use disorders.

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Director of Finance will define the process and implement the infrastructure/systems needed to support substantial growth over the next five to 10 years. They will oversee and evaluate the day-to-day fiscal operations within the Agency and continue to build and manage effective and streamlined administrative/financial systems, including financial, accounting, and physical infrastructure.
As a member of the executive management team, the Director of Finance will be involved in agency evaluation processes, and professional development initiatives, as well as participate in Bonita House’s programmatic expansion efforts. In addition, they will partner with the executive leadership and serve as staff to the board’s finance committee to develop and implement strategies across the organization. The Director of Finance will oversee all compliance and recognition for government (federal and state) contracts and private grants. They must be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace while managing a finance staff of six.
The Director of Finance provides recommendations to the ED based on financial analysis and projections, cost identification and allocation, and revenue/expense analysis; and reports to the board finance committee on the aforementioned including trends, and changes in the operating model and operational delivery. The Director of Finance participates in the ongoing strategic planning process, staffs the board’s finance committee and is responsible for the long-term budgetary planning and cost management in alignment with Bonita’s mission, vision and values.
Qualifications:
The Director of Finance will be a seasoned and mature leader with at least 8-12 years of broad finance experience, ideally beginning in audit, followed by experience gathering and evaluating financial information and making actionable recommendations to senior leadership. They will ideally have experience managing finance (accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting). They are responsible for full accounting activities of a non-profit agency including fund accounting with multiple funding sources, payroll, AR & AP, budget preparation, and fiscal reporting with various Federal, State, County and City funding proposals.
Required:
BA/BS from an accredited four-year college in Business, Finance, Economics, or a related field; a CPA,CMA, and/or MBA is preferred.
At least five years’ experience as Director or equivalent, preferably in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $10 million.
Experience in a senior financial-management role, direct supervision of line staff, collaborating with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies.
Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including sophisticated fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting.
Deep knowledge and understanding of the Office of Management and Budget Circular A133 audit.
Experience working with information technology staff to manage finance and accounting software packages.
Notable achievements in systems and policy development as well as in contributions to organizational strategy;

Must have a valid California Driver License, a driving record acceptable by the Agency’s insurance company, and proof of personal vehicle insurance.
Must be able to meet Immigration Reform Act of 1986 requirements.
Finance
Financial forecasting and cash flow for administration, payables, and receivables existing programs
Ensure timely production of accurate, full accrual financial statements and project budgets using MIP accounting software
Oversee cash, investment, and asset management.
Oversee financing strategies and activities, as well as banking and real-estate relationships.
Develop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans.
Lead and oversee annual budgeting process and the implementation thereof, to monitor progress and present operational metrics both internally and externally.
Strategic Planning, Risk Management, and Stakeholder Relations
Identify and assess trends and options, proactively call out areas of organizational risk/exposure (including HR and financial compliance), identify real and potential issues, and in consultation with the executive leadership team, choose a course of action and appraise outcomes.
Engage other members of the senior management team to facilitate cross-department collaboration that ensures that financial, IT, and HR solutions positively support Bonita House’s evolving strategy, operational delivery, and data collection needs.
Oversee the preparation and approval of all financial reporting materials and metrics for funding organizations and board of directors; prepare and communicate monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements
Coordinate the development and monitoring of budgets in collaboration with all Program Directors on personnel/benefits planning, Technology needs, budget development for all departments, grant proposal budgets, and monitoring reports
Develop financial business plans and forecasts.
Participate in corporate policy development including any CARF standards as a member of the executive management team.
Serve as staff to the finance committee of the board of directors to develop short-, medium-, and long-term financial plans and projections.
Represent the company to financial partners, including financial institutions, investors, foundation executives, auditors, public officials.
Ensure compliance with all government regulations, including those related to human resources, charitable registrations, state and federal grants, and lobbying
Regularly review risks and ensure that risk reduction policies and procedures are in place and complied with; maintain appropriate insurance coverages
Accounting and Administration
Review all formal finance processes, and administration, recommending improvements to the systems in place and going forward.
Oversee the accounting department to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting, inventory, systems and related functions.
Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.
Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for federal and state funders, foundations, and BHI’s board of directors; oversee the preparation and communication of monthly and annual financial statements.
Coordinate audits, proper filing of tax returns and prepare annual cost report
Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions
Ensure that finance staff maintains financial record systems in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, and monitor the use of all funds.
Oversee all audit activities inclusive of form 990 preparation.
Other related duties as assigned.
