Rancho Sisquoc is a historic agricultural operation near Santa Maria, California. It is multi-generational and family-owned since 1952. We produce and market wine, wine grapes and beef cattle , and manage leases for additional agricultural production. We seek to build value over generations through economic and environmental vitality, while preserving a unique and historic ranch.
Cattle Department Manager
Objective: Manage healthy livestock on perennial and annual forages to build system resiliency and ranch profitability.
Method:
Evaluate operation and opportunities utilizing outside resources as needed such as Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), universities, ag extensions, and land trusts. Report findings and recommendations to the Board and the General Manager. Based on consensus and Board direction, create, and implement sales and grazing plans. The plans should include optimum herd size compatible with sustainable agricultural practices and financial objectives, and act as a short- and long-term work plan.
Responsibilities:
Oversee two cowboys
Manage all livestock— both cattle and horses including veterinary and farrier care
Maintenance and repair of cattle troughs, fencing, irrigated pastures
Road maintenance with Cat or grader
Help with other ranch activities when needed, such as preparing for events at the tasting room
Work with government agencies as needed
Communication to the Board on current activities, achievements, concerns, and suggestions
Desired Qualifications:
5 years’ experience working for a cattle operation
Experience or interest in sustainable grazing practices and water management
Experience and skill working on horseback and ability to manage horse herd
Mechanical skills including ability to operate large machinery such as graders and tractors
Must have physical stamina necessary for lifting heavy objects and long workdays
Must have basic computer skills with ability to create reports, budgets, and track expenses
Excellent work ethic
Some Spanish or willingness to learn
Housing provided on our scenic and historic ranch. Truck provided for work- related duties.
Compensation commensurate with experience. Position reports to the General Manager.
