Position Summary:
A Grant Accountant position oversees the financial administration of grants and contracts from award setup through award closeout and ensures compliance with all Federal, State, University and sponsor policies, procedures, and guidelines. This position works closely with the financial and administrative units throughout the university.

Essential Functions:

• Maintains the accounting and reporting records for grants and contracts from federal, state, industry, and other awarding entities.
• Establishes new general and subsidiary ledger accounts in Banner Finance to track externally funded research and other sponsored activities expenditures.
• Reviews sponsored programs award criteria and determines proper account and grant attributes, length of award, and types of reporting requirements.
• Maintains Banner Finance System to insure the efficient and effective administration of sponsored programs accounts.
• Ensures that awarded amounts and expended amounts are recorded in the proper accounts in compliance with award terms and university policies.
• Monitors sponsored programs expenditure activity for compliance with award budgets, sponsor requirements, and university policies and procedures.
• Approves purchase requisitions, travel expense vouchers, Personnel Action Forms, and other expenditure actions after reviewing for proper object code use, available budget balance, compliance with sponsor terms and conditions, Uniform Guidance, other applicable government and industrial cost guidelines, and university policies and procedures.
• Transfers budget and expenses among budget line items within an account to ensure that the account detail properly reflects the financial transactions associated with the sponsored program.
• Prepares billing reports and invoices in accordance with grant and contract terms and conditions, sponsor reporting guidelines, and university policies and procedures via analysis of Banner Finance ledger accounts.
• Prepares fiscal reports and billings as required by sponsor terms and conditions through the review and analysis of monthly Banner Finance System expenditures and accounts receivable balances.
• Acts as the liaison between principal investigators, departmental administrative staff, and finance and budget departments.
• Interprets award terms and conditions, in order to ensure adherence to them.
• Manages the cost share accounts associated with grant awards.

Additional Functions:

• Performs other duties as assigned by Sr Director, Sponsored Research Management and Finance and Executive Director, Sponsored Research Programs Administration.
• Participates in special management/financial programs as assigned.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration.
• Minimum of three years of accounting experience, preferably in a university research grant and contract department.
• Understanding of accounting terms.
• Knowledge of PC and mainframe software applications.
• Skill in using Excel, and other systems applications.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• At the university’s discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be excepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
• Knowledge of Banner Finance System desirable. Knowledge of grant billing systems.
• Knowledge of Uniform Guidance regulations and requirements.
